Android 2.2 is in the process of rolling out to old and new phones alike, but it looks like Froyo may soon be upstaged by a newer version of Android.  The folks over at Android Police have heard from one of their sources that is "very close to the Android core" that Google will be dropping the SDK for Gingerbread some time next week.  If true, that means we'll get a look at all of the new goodies in the next installment of the Android OS, including a look at the user interface and any new features that may be present (like new forms of communication).  The tipster didn't specify whether Gingerbread would be Android 2.5 or 3.0, but from what we've heard, it'll likely be a 2.x update.

While this news may be terribly relevant to most mainstream users, those of us that are either in the industry or huge Android followers, or both, will be extremely interested to see Gingerbread's SDK.  We've heard that Google will be focusing on Android's UI with Gingerbread, so I'm looking forward to seeing just what they've got up their sleeves.  Just remember that this is being firmly placed in the "Rumor" category for now, so don't get disappointed if next week comes and goes without a whiff of fresh Gingerbread.
