If you've ever wanted to use a Skype app on your Android device, you were out of luck unless you happened to be toting a Verizon smartphone.  Thankfully that all changes today, as Skype has made their Android app available to all.  The catch is that the app can't make VoIP calls over 3G, instead being relegated to WiFi-only use.  Skype says that the app is only meant for devices running Android 2.1 or above and that, while it may work on OS versions below 2.1, there's no guarantee that everything will run smoothly if you're not on Eclair.  Also, a quick note for you Galaxy S owners: Skype has said that they're aware of some issues with their app on the Galaxy S which they're "looking to address" in the future.  If you're interested in getting your VoIP on, the Skype app is available from the Android Market (which finally shows apps in your local currency) right...now!

While it's totally awesome that Skype is finally available to most Android users, it is kind of disappointing that there is no 3G calling available.  Perhaps the carriers were a little concerned about allowing their smartphone customers to make VoIP calls over 3G, so they didn't allow that feature to make it in?  3G calling did eventually makes its way into the iOS Skype app, so let's just all cross our fingers and hope that the feature appears for Android users, too.  So, non-Verizon Androiders, are you excited to finally get access to Skype on your handset?
