Last week we reported that Verizon was planning to launch its own V CAST Android App Store alongside the Android Market, and today VZW let lose a release window for the store. The new V CAST Android App Store, which will allow free testing and carrier billing, will go live before the end of the year, Verizon says. Speaking with PCMag, Greg Haller, the vice presidentvice president of consumer solutions at Verizon, said that the carrier believes their own app store is necessary because it will give customers another choice and it will provide competition. While Haller couldn't name specific devices, he did speak about the DROID, DROID Incredible, DROID X, Fascinate, and Galaxy Tab. Finally, Verizon will be releasing new APIs to developers for their store, including both messaging and navigation APIs.
While I certainly understand Verizon's points in its explanation for why there store should exist, I'm not so sure that I completely agree with Big Red. Sure, the Android Market can be somewhat confusing to navigate for newbies to the platform, but I don't think adding another store will help the situation. Verizon's option may simpler, but who knows how many apps, and what the quality of those apps will be, compared to the Android Market. What are your thoughts on Verizon's V CAST Android Market?
