It's been a long wait for those of you patiently looking forward to the launch of WiMAX in San Francisco, but it appears that your wait is finally coming to an end. The folks over at IntoMobile did some testing with a Sprint Overdrive and were able to snag a 4G signal in several portions of the San Francisco area. During the tests, average speeds were clocked at around 3 Mbps and topped out at approximately 9 Mbps. Now that WiMAX has finally arrived in S.F., many wonder what has taken so long to get the coverage up and running. It turns out that after going through eight months of approvals, San Francisco's Planning Commission appealed the move over concerns than an earthquake would knock over towers and give the S.F. residents a heaping helping of radiation. It's all over now, though, because WiMAX is ready to give the residents of San Francisco some high speed mobile Internet.
While speeds and coverage may still vary for those of you in San Francisco, at least you can revel in the fact that 4G has finally made its way to S.F. If that's not enough, we've heard in the past that San Francisco will be included in Verizon's initial LTE roll out this year and, while nothing is confirmed, S.F. could definitely be considered an "NFL city," so I'd say it's a lock.
