We've heard the name "BlackPad" thrown around for Research In Motion's upcoming tablet device, but a new trademark shows that they may be heading in another direction. RIM has filed a trademark application for the name "SurfBook" with the Canadian Intellectual Property Office (CIPO). After examining the filing, the word "tablet" does pop out in the "Wares" section of the page. RIM hasn't filed for the trademark with the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office, so at this point they may just be filing for names to cover any ideas they come up with.
I'm not sure how I feel about the name SurfBook just yet. The "Book" portion of the name makes me feel like it wouldn't be a good fit for BlackBerry's tablet, but then again just because the word tablet shows up in the filing doesn't mean that it's for a tablet device. When I hear SurfBook, I think of some sort of smartbook or netbook. Perhaps RIM is planning their own computer along with a tablet? At this point, no one knows for sure. Do you think RIM is considering SurfBook for their tablet or some other product?
