The Android 2.2 coming to Motorola's DROID is certainly one of the more anticipated Android events in recent memory, but this news may dampen that excitement a bit. Verizon announced today that the DROID will not be packing the Mobile Hotspot or tethering, two of the biggest Froyo features. Verizon spokesperson Brenda Raney explained that the "Droid by Motorola doesn't have [the] hardware to support a Mobile Hotspot. With tethering there is no Connection on the PC side that will allow you to tether the device so the answer is that option isn't part of this update."
This is definitely disappointing news for DROID owners, although it sounds like tethering may come along in a future update. Some users are suggesting that Verizon and Motorola have removed the hotspot feature so that the DROID X and DROID 2 can tout that feature, which sounds understandable. The original DROID, still a perfectly capable device, could take away from sales of the new DROID X and upcoming DROID 2 if it supported all of the same features. There just wouldn't be much of an incentive to upgrade for some users. Besides, if a DROID owner really wants the ability to use their device as a mobile hotspot, I'm sure that they could find an app for that...
