Not that long ago, we saw some leaked images of Research In Motion's new service, then called BlackBerry Shield, designed to protect data and devices from loss or theft. Today RIM made Shield official and, besides the name, not much has changed since we last saw it. The service will officially be called BlackBerry Protect and will be available in a limited beta later this week and a full-on, open beta later in the year. Features of the free service include:
The devices included in the limited beta of BlackBerry Protect are the Storm (9500 and 9530), Storm2, Bold (9000 and 9700), Tour, and Curve (8520 and 8900). Your phone must also be running OS 5.0, with the exception of the Tour and the Curve 8900, which can be running 4.7.1 and 4.6.1, respectively. Considering all of the features, Protect looks like a great service for BlackBerry owners. With the low, low price of free, every BBerry owner should take advantage of Protect when it becomes available.
