The official Twitter client for Android is often considered to be one of the better applications available on the platform and is even built into Android 2.2. The app may soon have some real competition, though, as Twidroid has been acquired by TweetUp. Twidroid, one of the oldest and most popular Twitter apps on Android, will be renamed "Twidroyd" in order to avoid any trouble from Lucas Films, owners of the term "droid." In the future, the app will be bundled with "millions of upcoming Android phones from five of the leading handset manufacturers." Besides Twidroid, TweetUp also acquired popurls, a service that gathers content from popular sites like the New York Times, Digg, and Twitter.
The popularity of Twidroid has been well documented, especially since it's one of the original Twitter clients for the Android platform. With the release of the official Twitter for Android client, that popularity may have declined a bit. Still, if the Twidroyd app is going to be bundled with millions of Android devices, I'm sure that the app will do pretty well for itself in the future. How many of you out there are Twidroyd users?
