Whenever a new iPhone or any iOS other device is released, one of the first questions on everyone's mind is, "When is a jailbreak and unlock coming?" The iPhone 4 has proven to be slightly more difficult than past devices in this regard, but the iPhone Dev Team is making good progress. Dev Team member MuscleNerd recently used his Twitter account to announce that the team is making good progress on a carrier unlock for the iPhone 4. The tool used to unlock previous iPhones, ultrasn0w, needs to be completely rewritten for use with the iPhone 4 because of a new baseband used by Apple. Speaking about the progress on Twitter, MuscleNerd had this to say:
Next step is to keep the task backgrounded like we did for 3G/3GS http://is.gd/dh7Jh. Backgrounded task is the unlock.
Now that the Spirit jailbreak is ready for iOS 4, the iPhone Dev Team just has to wait for Apple to release the next version of iOS to make sure things are patched up in the next revision of the operating system. Apple recently said that they would be pushing out a software update to address iPhone reception issues in the next couple of weeks, so I'm sure we can expect the jailbreak and unlock to follow shortly after. While many improvements have been made to iOS with the version number four, many users still rely on a jailbreak and unlock to customize the experience to their liking. Stay tuned in the coming weeks, as I'm sure that things in the iOS hacking world are about to get crazy.
