Wow.  I want to say that a lot of people are going to be disappointed today, but at this point I'm just not sure that will be the case.  Gizmodo is reporting that a Sprint PR rep has confirmed they will not be selling the Nexus One, that is, they won't be offering a subsidy for purchasing the phone coupled with a Sprint contract.  The reason cited for this decision is the "upcoming availability of the award-winning Evo 4G."

Last month we saw something similar happen when Google announced that the HTC DROID Incredible, the N1s close cousin, would essentially be replacing the N1 on Verizon.  At the time, the thinking was that the move made sense, because both phones were really made for a similar demographic and to have two phones with incredibly similar specs didn't make sense (though keep in mind, it's key that Google actually signed off on this on their website).  Now, with the launch of the HTC EVO 4G around the corner, it looks like the same thing is beginning to unfold at Sprint.  All that's missing is an announcement on the Google Nexus One blog and a change on the google.com/phone website.

Last time there was a rumor that the Nexus one on Sprint would be cancelled, I reached out to Sprint and was told that "we have not made any updates on Nexus One since the March press release - we have not announced pricing or availability."  I re-read the initial press release and took the comment to mean that we would still see the N1 on Sprint, just not sold through Sprint retail channels.  Now it looks as if I may have been mistaken.

There's still a chance that the Nexus One will be available through Google's online store in the same way you can buy an N1 with AT&T 3G bands, but you'll have to pay the full price for the phone.  Only time will tell with this one, but it looks as if it's going to be unraveling quickly.  I've reached out to Sprint for a comment, and will update this post as I hear more.  How does this effect you?  Leave your thoughts in the comments!
