Considering the failure of Disney Mobile, Ampd Mobile, and MobileESPN - and the buyout of Helio and Virgin Mobile, the MVNO model has proven to be less than successful in the United States. The cost of building the brand, combined with the extravagant spending that MVNO's typically participate in have resulted in failure across the board (with a few small exceptions).
Apparently, NTT DoCoMo subscribes to a different school of thought, as the Japanese company is reportedly considering an entry into the US market through an MVNO targeting high-end users. According to the report, the MVNO would offer smartphones and other high end devices beginning in 2010, opening the door to a model not seen before. Does it stand a chance?
