Handango and Best Buy have just coupled up to offer a bunch of new apps for Windows Mobile, Blackberry, Palm, and Symbian S60 users via Best Buy's in-store Mobile Genie. Soon you'll be able to get yourself a shiny new cell toy and then pimp it out on the spot.
Using a brick-and-mortar retailer is an interesting choice for Handango. Most cell users download apps at home, usually while wondering in isolation if the darn thing will work (or crash their precious phones). This service, however, is designed to provide real live customer support. Trained staffers will be on hand to help with downloading, installation, and personalization, and can even sell games and app packages on MicroSD cards.
But if you like your solitary experience just fine, Best Buy?enabled downloads for select smartphones will come with Handango's In-Hand client, so future purchases can be done at home or on the fly.
There's no word yet on Android apps being available through this service, but that might change if it becomes popular and interest in the platform remains high. Until then, G1 users will have to visit Handango's online store or go directly to the Android Marketplace.
