Contract Free: Verizon Wireless launches monthly service plans

Verizon Wireless went all crazy today and launched contract free
service.  Okay, it's not all that crazy - it's basically the same
month-by-month service that many of the other carriers have. But it's still
cool if you've been jonesing to try out that Voyager you nicked from
your cousin at the last family reunion without committing to a two-year
contract.

Personally I could see picking up a used USB EV-DO modem on eBay and signing
up for a month at a time of laptop data when I know I'll be traveling.
Or maybe giving it a whirl to see if I could really use mobile
broadband instead of my home cable modem line before committing to a switch (yeah, right).  But if
you don't have a line on a cheap/free device, month-to-month may not be
for you.  That LG Voyager you've been eyeing?  It's $149.99 with a
two-year contract but jumps up to $409.99 on month-to-month service.
Such is the way of carrier subsidies.

To see the month-to-month pricing for a VZW device, head over to the
verizonwireless site, add a device to your cart, and select
from the "Pricing For" menu to the left of the device's photos.  Easy
enough to see just how much you save up front by signing on for two
years of service.
