Apple sent out emails to select media outlets Wed. inviting them to an "iPhone Software Roadmap" media event to be held at Apple HQ next Thursday, March 6. The text of the invite reads: ?Please join us to learn about the iPhone software roadmap, including the iPhone SDK and some exciting new enterprise features.? There was also a graphic attached to the invite depicting a map with three signs on it: "Enterprise," "SDK," and "Software Update."
Given that Apple had long ago announced the SDK would be delivered in February, this media event reeks of corporate spin doctoring. The "Roadmap" title gives off the ominous vibe that the SDK is still a ways off, and will be talked about but not delivered on the 6th. Hopefully I've got that wrong ...
There has also been talk of Apple developing Microsoft Exchange support for iPhone as well as an iPhone version of Lotus Notes having been in the works over at IBM for a few months now. The "Enterprise" portion of the roadmap will certainly deal with some form of corporate email support for iPhone, at the least - seems like Apple realizes they'll need to push into the corporate sector to reach that self-professed goal of 10 million units sold by the end of 2008.
We'll let you know what goes down in Cupertino next week, and what it spells for the near-term future of third party apps, corporate email, and more on your beloved iPhone.
