Motorola has scheduled their own press conference for Sunday night at CES to dovetail with the end of the Pepcom press-only preview event. While I'm not sure what Moto has up their sleeve to drag the bloggers away from the photo-ops and free snacks and booze of Pepcom, there's a pretty good chance it'll involve WiMAX (along with that Z8 media handset).
Moto just announced the release of the CPEi 100 WiMAX desktop device, and plans to show the CPEi 100 along with the rest of their WiMAX portfolio at the big show next week. The CPEi 100 is a consumer-friendly "plug and play" solution somewhat akin to a WiFi card - it serves as the interface between your desktop computer and the WiMAX network.
With Sprint still planning to roll out their Xohm WiMAX service on an aggressive timetable in 2008 (at least they haven't backed down from the plan publicly yet), the promise of WiMAX may be the story coming out of Las Vegas next week - at least as far as the mobile communications industry goes. Stay tuned...
