T-Mobile unveiled their first ever 3G-compatible handset in New York City this week.  The Samsung T639 - currently available at select stores in NYC only - is a clamshell phone with quad-band GSM/EDGE and WCDMA 1700 connectivity.  In other words, it's ready to rock and roll in the crazy high-speed world of 3G data.

Unfortunately, T-Mobile hasn't actually gotten their 3G network up and running just yet.  One can only hope, assume, and otherwise lay money on the notion that releasing a 3G-ready device means that T-Mobile's network itself is just about 3G-ready.  But you know what happens when you assume, right?  Nothing good happens, believe me.

I'll see what I can find out about T-Mobile's long awaited entry into the world of 3G networking.  Meantime I'll also keep an eye on Sprint's rollout of their 4G network, since the two events are more or less happening at the same time.
