New WiFi phones equipped with Skype software will be available for consumers to place calls from open access points anywhere in the world. By approaching numerous hardware partners, WiFi Skype phones will make it possible to connect to Skype via personal, business, or free public WiFi access points that do not require browser authentication. This connection will then automatically sync to your Skype account and contacts.
The Belkin WiFi, Edge-Core WiFi, NETGEAR WiFi, and SMC WiFi phones were announced today as the four certified WiFi Skype phones. Expected out later this summer, the four devices will sell on-line at Skype from $189 to $300. Skype will continue to offer free calling to any other Skype user in the world who is connected to a computer or has another Skype WiFi device. There will be an additional charge though for calls completed from your WiFi phone to any landline or mobile phones.
