When a new phone is announced, one of the things some people wait to see is what color options there will be at launch. And, in some cases, where those colors will be made available. Even Apple has made a big deal about its colors for the iPhone lineup in years past, and as far as I'm concerned no other company has had a reason to brag like Nokia has over the years.
I'm a big fan of color options for phones. I think it helps them stand out, but, even more than that, it gives an immediate way to recognize a smartphone. Rose Gold became a quick and easy way to recognize an iPhone just at a glance (even as other companies tried to mimic the color). And HTC has made a name for itself with those "liquid" back casings, which make the colors practically shine on their own.
And then there's that Nokia yellow. Or Nokia blue. Those were the good ol' days right there.
The only bad part about different colors is the fact that sometimes they aren't available everywhere, or even at launch. What can make this worse is when companies show off all the colors at the same time, but then that fine print kicks in. Or delays happen. Essential saw the release of its white variant well after the black model, and there's even a blue/green option coming down the pipe at some point.
Samsung just unveiled a Deepsea Blue variant of the Galaxy Note 8, and, unsurprisingly, it's a retail exclusive for the big box retailer, Best Buy. But if that wasn't enough, the company also just confirmed a Burgundy Red Galaxy S8 variant will arrive in South Korea, with no expectations right now that it will ever see an official launch in any other market.
These types of exclusives aren't rare, and they probably aren't going anywhere anytime soon. But they can be frustrating. That Burgundy Red Galaxy S8 looks really nice! I can't help but think that if Samsung could make it available in other markets, it'd sell pretty well. (If the Galaxy S8 sells well at all anymore, that is, considering its age on the smartphone market, the arrival of the Galaxy Note 8, and the upcoming release of the Galaxy S9.)
With the introduction of the Deepsea Blue Galaxy Note 8 today, I couldn't help but think that if I had a Midnight Black phablet, I would trade it in for the new color option. That blue is striking. But then I realized it would be kind of crazy to exchange, or sell off the Midnight Black variant just to get that new color. Or would it?
Which is my question to you. Have you ever exchanged, or sold off a phone just in the effort to get the same phone but in a different color? Or would you just get a case and call it good? Let me know!
