At the end of February, LG officially announced its newest flagship smartphone, the G6. It's the successor to the middling G5 from last year, which hung its cap on modularity. While LG, at the time, was adamant that it was prepared to back up that modular future, it didn't turn out to be the case. All those LG Friends accessories people bought are no longer supported away from the G5 itself, and the modular dream for LG has effectively kicked the can.
Who knows if it comes back some day. For now, though, LG decided to focus on the smartphone itself and reduce bezels.
The result is a top-tier smartphone that has plenty going for it, and puts LG directly into the conversation of whether or not you should buy their smartphone against the competition. Last year the Life's Good crew wasn't in that conversation for a lot of people, so it's at least good to see the company back on track, and releasing a flagship phone that can go toe-to-toe with other handsets in its tier.
The wait for the G6 has been long, but the arrival date has finally landed. Today, the G6 goes on sale, and so you can go into a wireless carrier's retail store right now and pick one up if you wanted. Of course, you'd have to do such a thing knowing that Samsung's Galaxy S8 arrives in just two weeks, another handset that drastically reduces the bezels for a legitimately impressive result.
Obviously the folks out there who aren't Samsung fans, and who don't want to give the Galaxy S8 a shot at all, won't be too worried about its arrival on the market later this month. But I'm sure LG is well aware that one of their biggest competitors has another flagship smartphone that could draw potential buyers in their direction, rather than LG's.
So I'm curious. On this day of the G6's launch, are you planning on heading into a store, or visiting an online store, to pick one up? Or will you be waiting for the Samsung Galaxy S8 to arrive before making your purchase? Or is there another manufacturer you're waiting to hear from later this year? Let me know!
