Following the discontinuation of the Galaxy Note 7 and Samsung’s explanation of what went wrong with the phone’s batteries, many folks turned their attention to the Galaxy Note 8. And today, some of the first details of the device have trickled out.
Samsung has given the Galaxy Note 8 the codename “Great,” according to a report from SamMobile. The international version of the Note 8 is expected to launch with the model number SM-N950F.
For reference, the Galaxy Note 7’s model number was SM-N930. Samsung is said to be skipping the model number SM-N940 because the number 4 is considered unlucky in Korea.
While we may not have the Note 8’s spec list or anything yet — the phone is still several months out, after all — these details do give something for folks waiting for the Note 8 to chew on. The codename of “Great” is an interesting choice, if only because it sounds like Samsung may be trying to give the Note 8 and everyone working on it a confidence boost following the disaster that surrounded the Note 7.
Speaking of the Galaxy Note 7, today’s report also mentions that Samsung is working on a refurbished version of the Note 7 for South Korea. Nothing has been confirmed quite yet, though, and it’s not clear if that device would be available anywhere outside of Korea if it does end up launching.
