Twitter has made some notable changes lately, like an algorithmic timeline and a dedicated GIF button in the mobile apps. And now it looks like the company is prepping another mobile-focused change.
An image posted to Google+ by Taylor Wimberly shows that Twitter is testing a night mode in its Android app. As you can see in the image below, this mode gives the entire background a darker hue, which should make it easier to browse your timeline when you’re in the dark.
Twitter’s night mode is currently only available to those users that are alpha testing the app, and even then, it’s not available to everyone. It’s unclear when or if the feature will be rolled out to everyone. It’s certainly possible that it could eventually find its way to the public release of Twitter for Android and to the Twitter apps on other platforms.
When you’re using your phone in the dark, say before you go to bed, it can be pretty easy to be blinded by an all-white UI like the one found in the regular Twitter app. A night mode can fix that, and if the app is able to accurately sense when it needs to flip night mode on and off, it can be a seriously useful feature. Because night mode is something that most all folks could appreciate, here’s to hoping that it ends up making its way to all users.
