It’s been a while since there’s been any big news regarding Project Ara, Google’s modular smartphone project, but that’s changing today.
On the final day of Google I/O, Google dropped some new details on Project Ara. It revealed that a Developer Edition of Project Ara will ship in fall 2016, and if you’re interested in developing an Ara module, you can register your interest with Google right now.
Google added that it hopes to ship a consumer version of Project Ara in 2017.
Rounding out today’s Project Ara news is a new video teaser for Google’s effort. The video shows off many different modules for Project Ara, the different features that they can add, and how quickly you can swap modules on your Project Ara device.
We’ve been hearing about Project Ara ever since Motorola first announced it in late 2013. Since then, the project has changed hands and ended up at Google after Google sold Motorola to Lenovo. Now Google looks like it’s finally gearing up to make Project Ara a thing and actually unleash it to consumers. If Google is actually able to get Ara to devs later this year and consumers in 2017, it’ll be a big deal not only because it’ll be a new modular smartphone, but also because it’ll be a new phone from Google.
