Following rumors suggesting that Microsoft will be buying SwiftKey, the company behind the popular Android and iOS keyboards of the same name, Microsoft has confirmed that the deal is done.
Microsoft said today that it has agreed to acquired SwiftKey in a deal that’ll see SwiftKey’s employees join Microsoft. Microsoft says that the predictive technology used in SwiftKey’s keyboards aligns with its goal of developing “intelligent systems that can work more on the user’s behalf and under their control.”
The good news for SwiftKey users is that the keyboards for both Android and iOS will continue to be available, and Microsoft has committed to continuing development of them as well. Microsoft also plans to integrate SwiftKey tech into its Word Flow keyboard for Windows, and it’ll share more info on that effort in the coming months.
SwiftKey is one of the most popular third-party keyboards on both Android and iOS, and Microsoft would probably face some backlash if it said it’d be killing off the apps after acquiring SwiftKey. The good news is that Microsoft says that it plans to keep them around and continue development on them, so if you’re a SwiftKey user, you can rest easy knowing that your keyboard of choice will continue to be available.
