A source speaking to Fast Company says that, yes, Apple is planning to ship the iPhone 7 without a 3.5mm headphone jack. The tipster claims that Apple is working to make audio better on the iPhone 7 by working with Cirrus Logic to include a noise canceling tech to remove background noise during music playback. Interestingly, the source of today’s report says that it’s likely that Apple will sell a pair of Lightning-equipped EarPod headphones separately from the iPhone 7.
The removal of the 3.5mm jack from the iPhone 7 may not be the only big change that Apple makes with its new phone, says today’s tipster. They add that Apple will make the iPhone 7 waterproof and likely give it wireless charging support, too. The source says that Apple has been working on both technologies for a while now, but that it’s pulled them from previous iPhone models late in their development processes.
These rumors about the iPhone 7 are exactly that — rumors — until Apple takes to the stage and announces the device itself. That said, Apple has shown that it’s not afraid to make decisions that are controversial. The original iPhone lacked 3G, and more recently, Apple eliminated the 30-pin connector that’d been used on several prior iPhone models in favor of a new, thinner Lightning connector. So Apple ditching the 3.5mm jack for the iPhone 7 doesn’t seem out of the realm of possibility. And hey, maybe they could use features like wireless charging or a waterproof body to tempt folks upset about the missing 3.5mm jack to upgrade anyway.
