Apple typically makes big external changes with its non-s iPhone models, and a new report claims to have info on one of the tweaks that might be made with next year’s iPhone 7.
According to Japanese site Mac Otakara, Apple may not include a 3.5mm headphone jack with its next iPhone. Instead, you would use the iPhone 7’s Lightning port to connect headphones to the device. It’s said that Lightning-equipped EarPods headphones would be included to ensure that you would be able to listen to music, but if you wanted to use 3.5mm headphones, you’d need a 3.5mm to Lightning adapter.
Today’s report, which sites a “reliable source”, also claims that the iPhone 7 will be 1mm thinner than the iPhone 6s, which is 7.1mm thick.
The 3.5mm headphone jack is a pretty standard smartphone feature now, and even though that hasn’t always been the case, it’d still be a pretty big deal if Apple were to drop 3.5mm jacks from the iPhone. That said, Apple has shown that it isn't afraid to ditch existing tech in its products in exchange for added thinness — like compact disc slots on most of its latest Mac devices — and it likes to make its iPhone hardware thinner every year. There are also some Lightning-equipped headphones on the market already. Taking all that into consideration, Apple ditching the 3.5mm headphone jack in an upcoming iPhone model seems like a real possibility.
Do you think Apple will launch an iPhone without a 3.5mm headphone jack?
