In the lead-up to the OnePlus 2’s reveal, OnePlus dropped the details on a few of the specs of its new phone. One feature that it was proud of is the OnePlus 2’s USB Type-C connector, which isn’t exactly common in the mobile world quite yet. Since it’s not common, OnePlus went ahead and designed its own USB Type-C cable, and soon you’ll be able to buy that cable by itself.
OnePlus plans to begin selling its USB Type-C cable around three weeks after the OnePlus 2’s August 11 launch. The cable will sell for “about $5,” says OnePlus CEO Carl Pei, which is about half the price that OnePlus is currently asking for its Micro-USB cable.
OnePlus’s USB Type-C cable is nice for a few reasons. Not only it flat to help prevent tangles, which are so annoying, but it includes a silicone tie to help keep the cable neatly wound when not in use. And when it is in use, both ends are reversible. Yep, even the part that you stick in to a wall charger is reversible thanks to a special technology that lets the plug figure out how it’s been inserted. Plus, the cable is bright red, which just looks cool.
Five dollars for a flat USB Type-C cable that’s reversible on both ends seems pretty reasonable. OnePlus says that that price is at or even below the cost to make the cable, but it might be worth selling them so cheaply to try and flood the world with bright red cables that have the OnePlus logo on ‘em. Of course, not many devices use a USB Type-C cable right now, but you could grab one or two to keep on hand for when you do get a USB Type-C device.
