Just one year after taking the wraps off of the Tegra K1, NVIDIA has one-upped itself with the Tegra X1.

The NVIDIA Tegra X1 “super chip” combines an 8-core 64-bit processor with a 256-core Maxwell GPU. The Tegra K1 that was announced at CES 2014 includes a 192-core GPU, while the Tegra 4 that came before it had 72 GPU cores. The new X1 also supports 4K video at 60 frames per second and more than one teraflop of processing power.

NVIDIA says that its new Tegra X1 chip offers “twice the performance” over the Tegra K1 as well. The company explains that Tegra X1 is twice as power efficient as the Tegra K1, according to the GFXBench 3.0 benchmark test.

Overall the Tegra X1 sounds like a pretty impressive little chip that could bring mobile devices another step closer to more traditional gaming platforms. It could also handle some quality video playback as well. Unfortunately, it’s not clear when we’ll start to see the X1 start to appear in mobile hardware.
