Though it most likely won't be replacing the traditional SIM card in your phone, the carrier is launching a new "embedded SIM" system that will make it possible to build machine-to-machine (M2M) devices such as hospital monitors and energy meters able to connect to a server. The new technology is the size of a pinhead and is made of silicon versus the traditional plastic, allowing the embedded SIM to be hard-mounted directly.
?T-Mobile's embedded SIM solution drives efficiencies, speeds time to market, and extends the life of M2M solutions even in the toughest environments,? said John Horn, national director of M2M, T-Mobile USA. ?With our simple, streamlined certification process, we expect partners to have commercial solutions based on this new technology running on the T-Mobile network as soon as this summer.?
The technology will be available with T-Mobile in about six months.
