Apparently the holiday season has put Qualcomm in the mood to make some new chips. Hot on the heels of the announcement of the Snapdragon 805, Qualcomm today announced its new Snapdragon 410 chipset. One of the most notable features of the 410 is its 64-bit processing capabilities, making it the first Qualcomm chip of the 64-bit persuasion.
Also included with the Snapdragon 410 is an Adreno 306 GPU and integrated 4G LTE as well as support for both 1080p playback and 13-megapixel cameras, NFC, Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, FM radio and both dual and triple-SIM configurations. The Snapdragon 410 chipset can be used with Android, Windows Phone, Firefox OS and all other "major operating systems."
Qualcomm says that the Snapdragon 410 will begin sampling in the first half of 2014 and is expected to start appearing in commercial hardware in the second half of the year. The chipset is targeted at emerging markets and budget-friendly smartphones that sit below the $150 price point, though, so those of you hoping to see a 64-bit Qualcomm chip in your next high-end handset, you'll have to wait a bit longer. It's worth noting that the company does describe the Snapdragon 410 as "the first of many 64-bit capable processors," so I'm sure it won't be long before the words "Qualcomm" and "64-bit" are paired together once again.
