The combination of an upcoming Apple event, the coming and going of CTIA Wireless, and AT&T's CEO basically promising a 3G iPhone sometime in the next few months has the rumor mill all a tizzy.  Speculation, reports of leaked info, and dubious "spy shots" have been hitting the Web fast and furious over the last week in particular.  Here's a quick round-up of what we know ... or at least what we think we know ... about the highly anticipated successor to Apple's hot, hot phone.

Apple's Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) starts on June 9th.  Currently it's the next scheduled event on Apple's public calendar, and Apple's advertising it as a conference for Mac and iPhone development.

WWDC will just about mark the one-year anniversary of the first iPhone's ship date.  Apple's product release cycle generally involves a significant refresh to a product line each year - the price cuts and memory bumps the current iPhone has thus received don't qualify as a significant refresh.

Last week at CTIA, AT&T CEO Ralph de la Vega basically promised a 3G iPhone in the next few months. 

This totally bogus spy shot of a purported next-gen iPhone case redesign hit the Web last week.  The photo shows an all-black iPhone, but it looks to be a "paint job" applied to a current iPhone - maybe a Colorware job.

Some hacker types gleamed info from the most recent iPhone 2.0 beta software that seems to describe what chipset will be featured in the next-gen iPhone.  The Infineon S-GOLD3H offers a bunch of improvements to the current S-GOLD2H processor, including 3G network support (HSDPA and WCDMA) and significantly enhanced multimedia and imaging capabilities.  iLounge has much more on what the S-GOLD3H is capable of.

Now there's a story on TGDaily with a whole bunch of specifics, which is basically unheard of for an Apple product still (supposedly) more than two months from release.  Even the article's author wonders why Apple HQ has suddenly sprung a big leak when it comes to next-gen iPhone details. 

Still, TGDaily cites "industry sources" in predicting the 3G iPhone will launch at WWDC June 9.  They say the new phone will be 2.5mm thinner than the current model and also look and feel a little different - less "plasticky," to be precise.  The new model will launch at the same price points as the current iPhone ($399/8GB, $499/16GB), though there may also be a new 32GB version for $599.

And finally (for now), Into Mobile goes a half step further in reporting that the new iPhone SDK Beta includes a few bits that seem to hint at Stereo Bluetooth (A2DP) support in the new iPhone.  There's also mention of "RoleGPS," which could mean a move to true GPS capabilities on the new device — the current iPhone utilizes cell tower and WiFi triangulation techniques to achieve "faux GPS" for location based services.
