Vivo has shown before that it likes to push the boundaries of smartphone displays to help its devices stand out, like with the waterfall screen on last year's Vivo Nex 3. Now the company is going all out on a smartphone display again.
The Vivo Apex 2020 is a new concept phone with a 6.45-inch display that has 120-degree curves on both sides. Since the sides of the phone are all screen, there's no room for physical buttons. That means Vivo is using pressure-sensitive virtual buttons on the Apex 2020, which is also completely portless.
The cameras on the Apex 2020 are also notable. Like on last year's Nex 3, there's no notch to be found here. Rather than use a pop-up camera like on that model, though, the Apex 2020 has a selfie camera under the display.
Vivo has also made the rear cameras on the Apex 2020 special. First up, there's a "high-magnification continuous zoom" camera that offers 5x-7.5x zooming and real-time focus. This telephoto cam uses a four-group lens combination.
Also on the back of the Vivo Apex 2020 is a 48MP camera with a "gimbal-like structure" to help with stabilization. Vivo touts that this gimbal feature allows the Apex 2020's main camera to offer 200% better stabilization than typical OIS systems.
The other major feature of the Apex 2020 that Vivo is talking up is its wireless charging. The company says that the Apex 2020 offers up to 60W fast wireless charging, which could refill a 2000mAh battery in just 20 minutes.
The rest of the Vivo Apex 2020's spec list includes a Snapdragon 865 processor, 12GB of RAM, and 256GB of built-in storage. 5G support is packed in there, too.
Because this is a concept device, Vivo isn't saying when the Apex 2020 might actually be available to purchase. We'd definitely be interested in trying the Apex 2020 to see what its standout features are like to actually use, like how the 120-degree curved edges reject accidental touches and how well the "gimbal-like structure" of the 48MP can actually stabilize.
What do you think of the Vivo Apex 2020? Would you buy one if it were released to the public?
