T-Mobile's first 5G hotspot is now available

One year after T-Mobile kicked its 5G rollout into high gear with the launch of its nationwide 5G coverage, it's announcing another milestone: its first 5G hotspot device.

The Inseego 5G MiFi M2000 is T-Mobile's first hotspot with 5G support. It's available today at a price of $0 down and $14 per month for 24 months, or $336 full retail price. T-Mo will sell it to you for half off if you add a new line of service.

T-Mobile says that the M2000 supports its low-band and mid-band 5G, but not its mmWave 5G that's available in parts of a handful of cities. 4G LTE is supported, too, in case you find yourself in an area where T-Mobile's 5G coverage doesn't quite reach.

When it comes to spitting out 5G as a Wi-Fi signal for other devices, the M2000 supports Wi-Fi 6 and can connect up to 30 Wi-Fi devices at once. The hotspot also includes a 2.4-inch AMOLED touchscreen so you can view your signal and battery strength, and there's a 5050mAh battery powering the device that'll last for 24 hours on a single charge.

Of course, you'll need some data to go along with the new hotspot, and T-Mobile's got several options available. Its hotspot data-only plans range from 500MB to 100GB, and after you use your high-speed data allotment, you'll get unlimited data at 2G speeds. Video streams at 480p on these plans.

The plans will be available starting December 13 and start at 500MB for $5 per month. You can step up to 2GB for $10 or 5GB for $10, and the double-digit allotments include 10GB for $30 or 30GB for $40. There's also a 100GB plan that'll be available for a limited time and will be priced at $50 per month.

T-Mobile gave us a couple of brief updates on its 5G network today, too, saying that it's lighting up "thousands" of cell sites with mid-band 5G this month. It did not name specific cities that are getting new coverage, though.

Lastly, T-Mo is now branding its mid-band and high-band 5G as "Ultra Capacity 5G", which joins its low-band coverage that's branded as Extended Range 5G.
