We've been hearing rumblings for some time now that Microsoft is working on a more affordable next generation console to go alongside the Xbox Series X, and now we're finally getting our first look at the device.
The Xbox Series S, aka Lockhart, has been revealed thanks to a leaked render that's made its way online. Brad Sams, the source of today's leak, suggests that the Xbox Series X could launch with a price of $299.
Looking at the console itself, we can see a white box that looks to be quite a bit smaller than the Xbox Series X. There doesn't appear to be a disc drive, which would help to get that price down to $299, and there looks to be a USB port on the front for plugging in a controller or another accessory.
We can also see a large black circle on the top of the console. It's likely that that's to help with cooling the console, as the top of the Xbox Series X features a similar cooling setup.
Rumors say that while the Xbox Series S will use the same custom Zen 2 CPU as the Xbox Series X, the Series S will have less RAM (7.5GB versus 16GB) and around 4 teraflops of GPU performance compared to the 12 teraflops that the Xbox Series X will be able to put out.
Of course, the tradeoff is that while you are getting those lower specs, the Xbox Series S is likely going to be hundreds of dollars less than the Xbox Series X. It's been said that the Series X could cost $499 or $599, so the Series S could be a worthwhile option for folks who want to get in on the next generation of consoles at a lower price and don't necessarily need 4K gaming.
