T-Mobile is making an Android TV set-top box

We recently saw Verizon launch a new set-top box with Android TV in tow, and now it looks like T-Mobile may be planning a similar move.

A new T-Mobile TVision remote has gone through the FCC, and it appears that the box it connects to may run Android TV (via 9to5Google). Photos in the FCC filing show that the remote has a button dedicated for the Google Assistant as well as Back and Home buttons on either side of that Assistant button, similar to other Android TV remotes.

What's more, the company that's listed as making this remote is SEI Robotics, which has made quite a few other Android TV devices in the past.

Along with that Google Assistant button, this T-Mobile TVision remote has dedicated buttons for Netflix and YouTube. There's also an assortment of other buttons that you'd expect to find for controlling a TV service, including volume and channel controls, a play/pause button, Guide and DVR buttons, and a number pad.

Unfortunately, the FCC listing doesn't include any images of the box that this remote is supposed to control.

T-Mobile launched TVision back in April 2019, but we haven't heard much news about the streaming TV service since. It's only available in 8 markets — Chicago, Dallas-Fort Worth, Los Angeles, New York City, Philadelphia, San Francisco, Washington DC, and Longmont, CO. — and it's priced at $90 per month. For that price, you get more than 150 channels, 35,000 on-demand titles, and 400 hours of DVR.

Recent rumors have suggested that T-Mobile is working on a refresh of TVision, and so this Android TV set-top box could be part of that. It's not known what else T-Mo may be planning for this updated version of TVision, but the refresh is expected to happen this summer, so it may not be long before we learn more.
