It's been widely expected that along with the Pixel 4a, Google will launch a Pixel 5 and Pixel 5 XL later this year. New code discovered inside the Google app suggests that that may not be the case, though.
The new beta version of the Google Search app for Android includes references to a "Pixel 4a 5G" and a "Pixel 5" as well as the Pixel 4a we've come to know through many leaks (via 9to5Google). Interestingly, one thing that's not listed is a Pixel 5 XL.
Earlier this year, we heard that there were three new devices from Google in the works with the codenames "sunfish", "bramble", and "redfin". The "sunfish" is expected to include a Snapdragon 730 processor, and it's that device appears to be the Pixel 4a.
Then there's "bramble", which is thought to have a Snapdragon 765G processor that includes 5G support. That could be the chip inside this Pixel 4a 5G that today's leak hints at. And then "redfin" could be the Pixel 5 that may also have a Snapdragon 765G processor with 5G support.
It's looking like Google may shake up its Pixel phone strategy from years past. Previously Google offered a Pixel 3a and 3a XL as well as a Pixel 4 and 4 XL, but this new strategy would simplify the Pixel lineup a bit. The regular Pixel 4a could be the most affordable option with 4G and a plastic build, and then there would be a slightly pricier model with 5G support. Then the Pixel 5 could be the flagship model with 5G and a more premium build.
Google has introduced all of its previous Pixel flagships at an event in early October, and so it seems likely that the Pixel 5 could be announced around that time this year. And at this point, Google may just decide to announce the Pixel 4a and Pixel 4a 5G at the same time.
