iPhone 12 will reportedly not include a charger in the box

One month after a rumor claimed that the iPhone 12 will not include headphones in the box, we're now hearing that Apple may not pack in a wall charger, either.

The iPhone 12 will not include wired EarPods headphones or a power adapter in the box, says analyst Ming-Chi Kuo (via MacRumors). Instead, it's expected that Apple will launch a 20W power adapter as an accessory and stop making the 5W and 18W chargers that it currently sells.

We recently saw an Apple-made 20W power adapter leak out. The charger is said to use USB-C and offer Power Delivery fast charging.

Skipping the power adapter is said to be a way for Apple to reduce costs for the iPhone 12, which will reportedly have higher production costs because of the addition of 5G. Apple could also argue this is good for the environment because the packaging will be smaller and there will be less e-waste since it won't be making a charger for every single iPhone 12 and instead only customers who really need a charger will buy one.

Another reason that Apple may not include a power adapter with the iPhone 12 is to get consumers ready for a portless iPhone. Rumors say Apple may launch a new iPhone in 2021 without a Lightning port, which means it could rely entirely on wireless charging. Dropping the power adapter now could start getting consumers used to buying a charger separately before a new iPhone arrives with wireless charging as its only charging method.

It's unclear if Apple will include a Lightning-to-USB-C charging cable in the box with the iPhone 12, but analysts at Barclays suggest that it will. That would make it easier for iPhone 12 owners to charge their phone using a computer or a power adapter that they've already got.

What do you think of this rumor? Do you think its smart for Apple to not include a charger with the iPhone 12 or not?
