OnePlus 8 series confirmed to be 'all in' on 5G

We've heard rumblings that the OnePlus 8 series could include 5G support, but now OnePlus's CEO has just come out and confirmed it.

OnePlus CEO Pete Lau says that his company is "going all in on 5G." Speaking to CNET, Lau confirmed that the upcoming OnePlus 8 series will all support 5G, though he didn't refer to the upcoming devices by that name.

"I want to restate our commitment to 5G and our long-term investment," Lau explained. "We've been investing in 5G for several years and we see this as the direction going forward and one we're very much committed to."

Of course, the 5G phones we've seen launch so far haven't exactly been cheap, and it sounds like the OnePlus 8 phones will see increased prices too. "The new technology does add costs so costs have risen in comparison to 4G products," Lau said.

He wouldn't go so far as to give exact pricing for the next OnePlus phones, but he did say that OnePlus won't hit the $1,000 mark that we've seen from other smartphones lately. Lau teased that we'll likely see a pricier "Pro" phone and a regular model with a more affordable price tag.

OnePlus has always been focused on offering its phones at aggressive prices. The original OnePlus One made waves because it offered flagship-tier specs including a Snapdragon 800 series processor for just $299. While OnePlus prices aren't quite that low anymore, the company does still offer its phones at more affordable prices compared to some other flagships.

While it's good to hear that OnePlus is embracing 5G, it's no surprise to hear that with that embrace will come a price increase. We'll just have to see exactly how much those prices end up jumping.
