Samsung Galaxy S20 series expected to get two major Android OS updates

Samsung typically gives its flagship smartphones two years of Android OS and security updates, and it looks like the new Galaxy S20 series will be no different.

The Galaxy S20, S20+, and S20 Ultra have all been added to Samsung's Android Security Updates page (via SamMobile), with all three phones slated to receive monthly security patches like the Galaxy S10, S9, and S8 models before them. The Galaxy Z Flip will get monthly security updates, too.

This suggests that the Galaxy S20 series will be on the same update schedule as Samsung's other recent flagships, which means they'll get two Android OS updates. The three phones launched with Android 10, meaning owners will likely get Android 11 and Android 12 and that's it.

While Samsung's update schedule has remained unchanged for the past few generations of Galaxy S flagships, some folks may be frustrated that the Galaxy S20 series will be subject to that same update policy. We've seen the cost of many flagship smartphones rising in recent years, and the Galaxy S20 series is no different: the S20 starts at $1,000, the S20+ starts at $1,200, and the S20 Ultra starts at $1,400.

Some people may have been hoping that Samsung would extend its Android OS update plans for the Galaxy S20 series because they're so expensive. We've seen other Android device makers offer three years of OS updates, like Google with its Pixel phones and OnePlus, which has pledged to bring Android 10 to the three-year-old OnePlus 5.

Unfortunately for folks who plan on keeping their Galaxy S20, S20+, or S20 Ultra for several years, it looks like unlikely that your phone will get any major OS updates beyond Android 12.
