Microsoft's Project xCloud game streaming service hits iOS

After launching last year on Android, Microsoft is now bringing its Project xCloud game streaming preview to iOS.

Microsoft announced today that iOS users can now sign up to test Project xCloud through Apple's Test Flight program. In order to comply with Apple's App Store policies, though, the iOS program will be a bit different than the one on Android.

The iOS preview of Project xCloud is only available in the US, UK, and Canada. This program is only for Project xCloud, which streams Xbox games to your phone from the cloud, and not for Xbox Game Streaming, a separate feature that streams games from your own Xbox One console.

Microsoft also says that the iOS preview will start with just one game: Halo: The Master Chief Collection, whereas Android users have over 50 games to choose from.

Up to 10,000 people will be invited to the Project xCloud preview on iOS, with invitations getting distributed on a first come, first served basis. Because of how Apple's TestFlight works, Microsoft says it may cycle through some of the test participants to get a wider test group, meaning that if you get into the preview program you may not participate for the whole thing.

To sign up for the Project xCloud preview, you'll need an iPhone or iPad running iOS 13 or later, a Bluetooth-enabled Xbox One controller, and a Wi-Fi or mobile data connection with at least 10Mbps speeds.

You can register for Project xCloud and begin the signup process here.

There's no shortage of awesome games available on iOS, but it's still great to see Microsoft offering the Project xCloud preview on iOS. With it, gamers can enjoy console-quality titles on the go, complete with a physical controller that they've probably already got laying around. Now we just have to wait and see if and when Project xCloud launches to the public.
