It's been a couple of years since a new Apple TV model was released, but this week some details on a refresh device have leaked.
Code found within the tvOS 13.4 beta suggest that Apple is working on a new Apple TV model. The folks at 9to5Mac found an Apple TV codenamed T1125, which differs from the J105a and J42d codenames of the current Apple TV 4K and HD models.
Details on this new Apple TV device are pretty light, but files inside the tvOS 13.4 beta hint that it runs on the arm64e architecture. That's just like the Apple A12 and A13 Bionic chips used in the iPhone XS and iPhone 11 Pro, respectively. To compare, the current Apple TV 4K uses an Apple A10 Fusion chip, which was used in the iPhone 7.
It's also suggested that this new Apple TV will top out at support for 4K and HDR.
Moving to an A12 or A13 processor in the new Apple TV would give it quite a bit of power. And while the current model is definitely no slouch in terms of performance, Apple may want to make the next version even more powerful as it pushes its Apple Arcade gaming service.
Lots of folks are hoping that Apple will make a better Apple TV remote, too, but we'll just have to wait and see if that's among the improvements for the next version.
