Mobile payment services aim to reduce your need for a physical wallet by replacing it with a digital one, and today Google Pay is getting one step closer to achieving that goal for many students.
Google Pay now supports campus IDs on Android (via 9to5Google). With this feature, students can access facilities and residence halls as well as pay for dining, laundry, and vending machines, all with their phone.
Support for campus IDs in Google Pay for Android is launching at 15 schools:
Arkansas State University, Chowan University, College of Coastal Georgia, Duke University, Georgetown University, Hamilton College, Johns Hopkins University, Marshall University, Mercer University, Roanoke College, St. Edward’s University, South Dakota State University, Temple University, The University of Alabama, and University of New Brunswick
What's more, Mercer University in Atlanta has confirmed that it plans to launch support for its campus ID in Google Pay in Q2 2020.
This feature uses NFC, so students just need to tap their phone against the readers on their campus to gain access to a facility or to make a payment. Using these mobile IDs offers benefits over a physical ID, including added security and giving students one less thing to have to carry around and worry about losing.
