Instagram's new anti-bullying features let you hide someone's comments

Social media can be great for meeting and interacting with new people, but unfortunately there can be some bullying that occurs, too. Today Instagram announced some new features to fight bullying on its platform.

First up, Instagram is using AI to notify someone when they're about to leave a comment that may be considered offensive. "Are you sure you want to post this?" a pop-up will say. "We're asking people to rethink comments that seem similar to others that have been reported."

Instagram says that in its testing, this notification encourages some people to reflect on their comment, undo it, and "share something less hurtful".

If there are bullies leaving unwanted comments on your account, you can use Instagram's other new feature to hide them. A new feature called Restrict will let you hide someone's comments from everyone but them. You can also choose to approve a restricted person's comments if you want them to be visible to everyone.

Restricted users won't know that they've been restricted, nor will they know when you're active on Instagram or when you've read their direct messages.

Instagram's offensive comment alerts are now rolling out, and the Restrict feature will enter testing soon.
