Verizon tweaking activation fee, will charge less if you buy online

After raising its upgrade fee to $30 more than two years ago, Verizon is today reducing that fee in certain circumstances.

Starting Thursday, April 18th, Verizon will reduce the upgrade and activation fees for purchases made through Verizon's website or the My Verizon app, the carrier confirmed to CNET. The fee is currently $30, but it'll be dropped to $20 for customers who decide to upgrade online.

It's not all good news today, though. Verizon is increasing the upgrade and activation fees for customers who buy in-store or over the phone. The fee for this "full-service experience" will grow to $40.

It's never good to see fees increase, but at least you'll have the option of paying a lower upgrade or activation fee if you buy your new device online or in Verizon's app. Plus, we're getting this news in advance so that you can be prepared for the different fee the next time you buy a new device from Verizon.
