Samsung begins mass production of new 12GB LPDDR4X RAM chips for phones

RAM is a major bullet point on the spec list of many Android smartphones, and today Samsung confirmed that it's begun mass production of a significant new RAM chip.

Samsung says that mass production for its new 12GB low-power double data rate 4X (LPDDR4X) chip has begun. This 10nm-class chip is 1.1mm thick and offers a data transfer rate of 34.1GB per second while also minimizing the increase in power consumption caused by an increase in DRAM capacity, explains Samsung.

We know that Samsung already offers a 12GB RAM option, because the top-end Galaxy S10+ comes equipped with 12GB of RAM. Samsung touts that this new chip combines six 16Gb LPDDR4X chips on the 10nm-class process into a single package, though, which will get you more space inside your phone for a bigger battery. Lots of RAM and more battery life? Sounds like a great combo to us.
