Google has a wide variety of hardware, including phones, tablets, laptops, smart displays, and possibly some new gaming hardware, but a new report claims that Google could be paring down its hardware division.
Google is making major changes to its laptop and tablet division, moving dozens of employees out of the team and telling them to find new projects within Google or Alphabet to work on. That's according to a report from Business Insider, whose source says that hardware engineers, technical program managers, and workers who support program managers are the ones who have been moved out of the laptop and tablet group.
Today's report says that this Create group, which worked on the Pixelbook and Pixel Slate, is experiencing "roadmap cutbacks" and that while it had a "bunch of stuff in the works," the decision to move hardware engineers and program managers will like result in a slimming of the division's product portfolio.
Google has released a handful of tablets and laptops over the years, including the Pixel C tablet, the Chromebook Pixel, the Pixelbook, and the Pixel Slate, but none have really caught on with consumers. Because of this, it does seem possible that Google could decide to scale back its efforts on tablet and laptop hardware. While it may not be abandoning the category completely, it could be a while before we see a new Pixel tablet or laptop again.
