AT&T 5G network coming to Minneapolis and Chicago in 2019

AT&T launched its 5G network in December of last year, and now the carrier is working to expand coverage in 2019. Today it revealed two more cities that'll get its 5G network this year.

Minneapolis, MN and Chicago, IL will get AT&T 5G coverage in 2019. They join the seven other cities currently slated to get AT&T 's 5G network this year, which include Las Vegas, Los Angeles, Nashville, Orlando, San Diego, San Francisco, and San Jose.

AT&T's 5G network is currently live parts of 12 U.S. cities. They are Atlanta, Charlotte, Dallas, Houston, Indianapolis, Jacksonville, Louisville, Oklahoma City, New Orleans, Raleigh, San Antonio, and Waco. The network uses millimeter wave (mmWave) spectrum and is called "5G+". AT&T plans to have nationwide 5G coverage by early 2020 using sub-6GHz spectrum.

When it comes to hardware that you can use to access AT&T's 5G network, the carrier currently only offers the Netgear Nighthawk 5G Mobile Hotspot. It's only available to select businesses and consumers, but AT&T has said that it'll be more widely available in spring 2019. Pricing for the device is set at $499 upfront and $70 per month for 15GB of 5G data usage.

AT&T has said that it plans to launch two 5G Samsung smartphones in 2019. The first is coming this spring with support for AT&T's mmWave 5G coverage, while the second is launching in the latter half of 2019 with support for both mmWave and sub-6GHz spectrum.
