Samsung foldable smartphone could launch in March with a price of more than $1,700

Last week, Samsung gave us a peek at its Infinity Flex Display, showing a prototype phone with an external screen that unfolded to reveal a much larger display. Samsung didn't say much about when the foldable phone might be released to the public, but today a rumor claims to have more info on Samsung's plans.

Samsung will launch its foldable smartphone in March, according to a report from Yonhap News Agency. The price of the device hasn't yet been determined, but analysts suggest that it could cost 2 million won ($1,756 USD).

Shown during the Samsung Developer Conference, Samsung's foldable phone features an external 4.3-inch display with a resolution of 1960x480 and a 21:9 aspect ratio. When you unfold the device, you get a 7.3-inch 2152x1536 display with a 4.2:3 aspect ratio.

When it comes to software, Samsung has said that apps you're using on the cover display will open up on the larger display when the device is unfolded. Samsung is also working on a Multi-Active Window feature that'll let you run three apps at once. Additionally, Google has said that it's working closely with Samsung on a foldable smartphone, and Google is expected to add official support for foldable displays into Android Q.

While today's info on Samsung's upcoming foldable smartphone is still very much unconfirmed, it wouldn't be a surprise to see the device launch with a high price tag. New technology typically doesn't come cheap, and this foldable smartphone seems to be more of a proof of concept than a phone that Samsung expects to catch on with most consumers. If foldable phones prove popular, they'll gradually become cheaper as the technology improves.
