For the past few months, the only way to get a pair of Snapchat Spectacles was to find a bright yellow vending machine that’d pop up in different cities throughout the US. Now you can buy a pair without leaving your chair.
Snapchat Spectacles are now available online. They’re being sold by Snap Inc., the company behind Snapchat, for $129.99. There are three colors available — Coral, Black, and Teal, and each unit comes with a charging case and cable.
As of this writing, new orders of Spectacles are expected to be delivered in 2-4 weeks.
Spectacles capture video using a 115-degree wide angle camera built into the glasses. You can use them to capture up to 10 seconds of video at a time that can then be wirelessly synced to your smartphone and shared to Snapchat. And because the video from Spectacles has a wide field of view, your viewers can tilt their phone horizontally to see more of your video.
You’re going to have to be pretty into Snapchat if you’re going to wear sunglasses with a camera that records video only for Snapchat, so these Spectacles aren’t for everyone. For those folks that do like Snapchat and its ephemeral photos and videos, though, Spectacles seem like a nifty gadget. They’re not terribly expensive and they offer a couple of nice features, including the wide angle camera and the ability to keep your hands free while capturing Snapchat video.
