Google will soon more deeply integrate web apps into Android

Google is improving the way that Android handles web apps.

Google has announced that the upcoming beta release of Chrome for Android will include Progressive Web Apps support. With this feature, Chrome will offer better integration of web apps into Android.

When you add a Progressive Web App to your device, it’ll appear in your app drawer and in the Android settings. Normal web apps don’t support this. Progressive Web Apps will also be able to receive incoming intents from other apps, and long-pressing on a Progressive Web App will reveal the normal Android notification management controls.

While this feature is being announced for Chrome, Google says that it is committed to offering the same support for Progressive Web Apps to all browsers on Android.

The goal of Progressive Web Apps is to help eliminate confusion for users. These web apps look just like regular apps, but previously they didn’t behave like a normal app. For example, normal web apps don’t appear in the app drawer. Progressive Web Apps will change that, working much more similarly to a native app that you’ve got installed on your phone.
