Google Maps update brings ride services improvements, deeper Uber integration

Google is kicking off the new year with an update for Google Maps.

A new Google Maps update is now official, and it brings with it an updated ride service experience. That includes more types of ride options and more actionable information.

When you open the ride services portion of Google Maps, you’ll see a regular Google map along with ride service providers around you. You can then tap on the ride service provider that you’d like to use and see all of the ride options available as well as any special offers or promos that may be available.

The images below show the old Google Maps ride services interface on the left and the new interface on the right.

Uber integration is getting even better in this update. With the new Google Maps, you can book an Uber ride and pay for it, all without leaving Google Maps. The integration even works if you don’t have the Uber app installed on your phone. All that you need to do is sign into your Uber account within Google Maps.

With this Uber integration, you can view the info of your destination during the ride, letting you view details like hours and menus while you’re in the Uber.

This is a pretty significant update for Google Maps. Not only is the ride services portion of Google Maps much better looking, it’s also much more useful, letting you see the various rides and promos available to you. And if you use Uber, then the update can save some space on your phone by letting you book and pay for Uber rides from within Google Maps, meaning that you don’t need the dedicated Uber app.

This Google Maps update is now rolling out on Android and iOS.
